ABOUT THE AWARD

Purpose of the Awrd

Scholarships in the amount of $1,500 are awarded annually (half of the amount in the spring and fall semester as long as eligibility criteria are met) to college students who intend to pursue academic and/or career paths that would enable them to advance the causes as a future educator.

Students must demonstrate knowledge in this discipline
and must be able to show how their academic pursuits will bring them to this goal.

The student may not be a relative of the member of the 1906 Project, Inc. Board.

WHO CAN APPLY

Eligibility Requirements

Are Black or African American and current high school senior at the time of their application with demonstrated academic achievement.

Are accepted as a first term matriculated freshman at an accredited four-year college or university in pursuit of an undergraduate degree.

Have demonstrated leadership ability through participation in community service, and/or extra-curricular activities.

Are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents with a valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551

Have permanent resident status in Queens or Nassau County, New York (with proof of residency) at time of award.

Applied for financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

The complete application packet must include the following required documents.

Incomplete applications or those missing any required documents may not be considered for the scholarship.

Student Personal Information Form

One (1) completed Student
Personal Information Form.

Scholarly Essay Submission

One (1) typed essay from the student of at least 500 words and a maximum of 2,000 words using Times Roman type face, 12 point font, double spaced and one inch margins on both sides. Essay questions are on the last page of this form.

Letters of Recommendation

Three (3) letters of recommendation from someone who knows the student’s academic accomplishments and/or community service achievements and accomplishments. Recommendations should not be from a member of the student’s family.

Official Academic Transcript

One (1) official academic transcript.

SAT/ACT Score Report

Official SAT/ACT scores.

Fall Registration Verification

One (1) copy of Fall registration prior to receiving the scholarship.

Personal Photograph

One head shot or personal photograph.

PROCESS OF AWARD DISTRIBUTION

A letter of intent will be made to the awardees prior to the actual distribution of funds. Two (2) payments will be made during the academic year to the awardees. Awardees must submit proof of registration in the form of a bursar’s receipt or a letter from the registrar of his/her college or university.

Students may use the scholarship to cover the costs of tuition, fees, books, room and board, computers, health insurance, study abroad and other college-related expenses.

Important Deadline

The completed nomination packet
must be postmarked no later than

April 15, 2019.

Applications will not be considered after the deadline. Incomplete packets will be automatically disqualified.
