Our Story
Strengthening Neighborhoods Through Partnership
The 1906 Project, Inc., is a 501(c) 3 charitable organization that works to build stronger neighborhoods by partnering with local individuals and institutions to advance quality service initiatives.
Started in 1995, The Project works to address gaps in the delivery of community service programs by working with local leaders to find immediate solutions.
The Project continuously seeks new opportunities and relationships to expand its reach into neighborhoods.
We work with community partners committed to improving the quality of life in the neighborhoods where we live, work and play.
Our partners, include:
Individuals, Start-ups and Not-For-Profit organizations that need additional resources or administrative assistance to meet a community need.
Established institutions searching for additional resources or technical expertise to grow, or fill gaps in existing community programs.

Not-For-Profit Started
1995 | THE 1906 PROJECT, INC.
The 1906 Project, Inc., a 501(c) 3 charitable organization was formed to channel the board members’ talents, resources, connections and experiences to benefit the community starting with the acquisition of the Salvation Army building in 1996.
The original goal was to relocate a Senior Center from a space in a church basement to a modern first-class, handicap accessible facility in the heart of the Southeast Queens community.
First Property
1996 | FIRST BUILDING PURCHASED
The Project’s first property is a 10,000 square-foot building located in the heart of Cambria Heights at the northeast corner of Linden Boulevard and 220th Street.
The building now serves as a central hub for community-based organizations in Southeast Queens.
Community Center
2007 | SENIOR CENTER
In 2007, the Alpha Phi Alpha Senior Citizens Center – which has served the community for over three decades – became the building’s first tenant. It operates out of 6,000 square-foot space.
Community Gift Giving
2008 | ANNUAL HOLIDAY TOY GIVEAWAY
The Project has given out more than 1,500 toys in Southeast Queens during the holiday season to children between the ages of 2 to 11-years-old.
Holiday Cheer
2008 | ANNUAL THANKSGIVING MEAL BASKETS
Supporting children, families and seniors, The Project has provided more than 1,000 Thanksgiving meal baskets to local community residents.
Helping Families
2009 | FORECLOSURE PREVENTION PROGRAM
In 2009, New York State awarded the company a $300,000 grant to administer a Foreclosure Prevention Program in Southeast Queens.
The Project provided Outreach/Education services to the residents of Community District 12 by conducting foreclosure and prevention community workshops and informational seminars.
The Hopkins Law Group provided free legal services for the assessment/consultation phase for all participants. The legal services helped save people from losing their homes.
Student Scholarship Started
2010 | THE 1906 PROJECT, INC., DAVID F. BLUFORD EDUCATION AWARD
The 1906 Project, Inc., Education Award was established in honor of legendary Educator David F. Bluford, ED.D.
The Award recognizes high school seniors who have demonstrated excellence in their academic and extracurricular achievements. Awardees must be pursuing their college degree.
International Relief
2010 | HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND
In February 2010, a devastating earthquake resulting in the death of hundreds of thousands of Haitian changed the lives of an entire country.
The Project donated $2,000 to the Haitian Relief Fund established by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., to help with direct recovery and rebuilding efforts.
Name Change
2012 | THE 1906 PROJECT, INC.
The name of the Zeta Zeta Lambda Company, Inc., was officially changed to The 1906 Project, Inc.
